Dog Beds

Dog beds come in a few main shapes: round donut and bolster beds for dogs that curl up, flat mattresses and mats for dogs that stretch out, and cooling pads or raised cots for warm days. Pick the shape that matches how your dog sleeps, then choose a size a little longer than your dog lying down.

How to choose a dog bed

  • Sleep style: Curlers usually like a donut or bolster bed with a raised rim to lean on. Dogs that sprawl do better on a flat mattress or rectangle bed. Dogs that run warm may prefer a cooling pad or a raised cot.
  • Size: Measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail while lying down, then add a few inches. Our dog bed size guide walks through it step by step.
  • Cleaning: A zip-off cover is the easiest to wash. Smaller plush beds and mats can often go in the machine whole, so check each product's care notes.
  • Floors and support: A non-slip base helps on hardwood and tile. An egg-crate foam mattress adds more cushioning, and a raised cot keeps your dog off cold or damp floors.

Frequently asked questions

Which type of bed is best for dogs?

It depends on how your dog sleeps. Dogs that curl into a ball usually settle best in a donut or bolster bed with a raised rim. Dogs that stretch out on their side need a flat mattress or rectangle bed long enough for their full length. Dogs that pant or seek out cool tile often do well on a cooling pad or raised cot.

What size dog bed should I get?

Measure your dog lying down from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, then add about 6 to 12 inches for a flat bed. For a donut or bolster bed, compare that length to the inside diameter. If your dog falls between two sizes, choose the larger one so they are not hanging off the edges.

How do I wash a dog bed?

Shake or vacuum off loose fur first. If the bed has a zip-off cover, remove it and machine wash it on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Smaller plush beds and mats marked machine washable can go in whole. Let everything dry completely before your dog uses it again, and follow the care notes on each product.

Do cooling dog beds work?

Cooling beds feel cool to the touch or let air move underneath, which gives warm dogs a more comfortable spot to rest. They do not replace shade, fresh water and air conditioning on hot days. A raised cot is helpful outdoors, while a cool-touch pad works well indoors on floors, sofas and in crates.
