Dog Seat Belts

A dog seat belt is a short, adjustable tether that clips into your car's seat-belt buckle at one end and your dog's harness at the other, so your dog cannot roam the cabin. Choose a length that lets your dog sit and lie down without reaching the front seats, and always attach it to a harness.

How to choose a dog seat belt

  • Harness only: Clip the tether to a well-fitted harness, never a collar, so any pull is spread across the chest instead of the neck.
  • Length: Set the length so your dog can sit or lie down comfortably but cannot reach the front seats or hang out of the window.
  • Bungee section: An elastic section cushions sudden stops and sharp turns, so your dog feels a gentler pull.
  • Buckle fit: Both belts fit standard seat-belt receivers. Check yours before the first trip. These belts keep your dog in place, but they are not crash-tested restraints.

A seat belt works best with a good harness, so browse our dog harnesses. For small dogs, see dog car seats and boosters, and protect the upholstery with dog car seat covers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the safest car restraint for dogs?

There is no single answer, and few products are independently crash-tested. Common options are a secured crate or carrier, especially for small dogs, or a well-fitted harness attached to a seat-belt tether. Whichever you choose, keep your dog in the back seat, attach restraints to a harness rather than a collar and never let your dog ride loose.

Should a dog seat belt attach to a collar or harness?

Always attach a dog seat belt to a harness. A sudden stop or sharp turn can put a lot of force on your dog's neck if the tether is clipped to a collar. A harness spreads that force across the chest and shoulders. Check that the harness fits snugly before every trip.

How long should a dog seat belt be?

Long enough for your dog to sit, stand and lie down comfortably, but short enough that they cannot reach the front seats, the footwell or an open window. Adjust the length with your dog in the car, then test it by letting them move around before you set off.

Do dog seat belts work in any car?

Our dog seat belts clip into standard seat-belt receivers found in most cars, SUVs and trucks. Some vehicles use different buckle shapes, so check that the clip locks firmly and releases easily before your first drive. Never use the belt if the buckle does not fully latch.
