How to Choose the Right Dog Bed Size and Style

|Muttfield Team

A dog bed that's too small gets ignored, and one that doesn't suit your dog's sleeping style ends up as a very expensive floor mat. Here's how to choose a bed your dog will actually use.

1. Measure your dog

Wait until your dog is lying down in their usual sleeping position. Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, then add 6 to 10 inches. That's the minimum length to look for. If your dog likes to stretch out fully, measure them in that position instead.

2. Watch how your dog sleeps

  • Curlers sleep in a tight ball. Round donut beds and beds with a raised rim give them something to lean into.
  • Stretchers sprawl on their side. Flat mats, crate pads and rectangular beds give them room.
  • Leaners like to rest their head on something. Bolster and sofa-style beds work well.
  • Warm sleepers who move to cool tile floors may prefer a cooling mat or a bed with a breathable surface.

3. Think about age and joints

Older dogs and large breeds often do better on a thicker, supportive base that's easy to step onto. A low entry and a non-slip bottom also help on hard floors.

4. Plan for washing

Every dog bed needs cleaning eventually. A removable, machine-washable cover makes this far easier. For dogs who drool or have accidents, look for water-resistant layers or wipe-clean surfaces.

5. Choose the spot first

Decide where the bed will go before you buy. A crate needs a pad that fits its floor, a living room corner might suit a round bed, and the car calls for something you can fold or roll up.
